Balancing Exploration and Exploitation: Discriminative-Model-based Fault Injection Parameter Search

Abstract

Fault Injection (FI) attacks are physical attacks that deliberately induce malfunctions in a target device. Inducing the intended fault requires precise tuning of the FI parameters, for which automated search strategies have been proposed. Most favor either exploration or exploitation: the former covers a broad region of the parameter space, while the latter discovers many successful parameters. An effective search, however, should find parameters that are both numerous and broadly spread. We propose a search framework that achieves this with two complementary discriminative models: an exploration model that learns the boundary where faults are likely, and an exploitation model that concentrates on the neighborhoods of discovered faults. We further introduce the Refinement-Oriented Successive Halving Algorithm (RSHA), which selects a highly reliable parameter from the discovered ones, using an evaluation budget derived from a target estimation precision. Across four scenarios---voltage glitching and electromagnetic fault injection on two off-the-shelf microcontrollers, the 8-bit ATXmega and the 32-bit SAM4S---our method finds up to 26.7x as many distinct successful parameters as state-of-the-art methods and attains up to 5.8x their parameter space coverage. At the full budget of 100,000 injections, the parameter that RSHA selects from our discovered set achieves a success rate up to 7.6 percentage points higher than the one it selects from the best baseline's set.
