Polynomial Batch Accumulators for Onboarding-Dominant Zero-Knowledge Membership Proofs
Abstract
Zero-knowledge membership accumulators are conventionally tailored for slowly growing sets with frequent proof generation, creating severe efficiency bottlenecks for modern compliance architectures. Governance-driven applications like FATF customer due diligence, eIDAS 2.0 wallet issuance, and MiCA VASP authorization invert this structure. In this regime, rosters are ingested at an enterprise scale, while proofs are requested selectively. To resolve this mismatch, we introduce Polynomial Equation Batching (PEB), a membership accumulator for onboarding heavy workloads. PEB represents up to 128 members per batch as a characteristic polynomial and hashes its coefficients via Poseidon, seamlessly scaling to arbitrarily large populations through parallel batching. We present two variants: PEB-A, which maps member secrets directly to polynomial roots for maximum performance, and PEB-B, which hashes secrets in-circuit for hardened security. Implemented in Noir and Barretenberg on BN254, and evaluated for up to 1,048,576 members, PEB provides significant performance improvements. Compared to incremental Merkle trees, PEB-A achieves up to a 149.07x mean speedup in per-user initialization while incurring a modest 33.87% proof-generation overhead. Additionally, against static Merkle trees, PEB-A delivers a 15.71x speedup during setup. By shifting off-circuit overhead from hash evaluations to field multiplications, PEB provides a highly efficient, scalable solution for real-world zero-knowledge compliance systems.
