Abstract

The widespread adoption of shared last-level caches in modern multi-core processors improves memory efficiency but introduces timing channels between untrusted programs. In particular, Flush+Reload serves as a high-resolution cache side channel and a fundamental data leakage mechanism in transient-execution attacks. Existing detection approaches predominantly rely on aggregate hardware performance counters, which discard spatial context, fail to locate the malicious core, and often confuse stealthy attacks with benign cache-intensive workloads. This paper addresses these gaps by proposing RingTrace, a system-level monitoring framework that synergizes core-local and uncore telemetry. We capture and normalize per-core cache misses alongside distributed slice activity across uncore CBoxes. Through Joint Spatio-Temporal Attribution (JSTA), we formulate an interpretable joint-activity matrix that captures spatial concentration and co-activity without requiring model training. In the hierarchical response, the largest entry of this matrix serves as the initial screening score, while its row sums identify a candidate core. Our approach reliably identifies victim-independent flush activity prior to secret leakage, effectively suppresses false alarms under severe concurrent memory pressure, and achieves rapid process confirmation with negligible application runtime overhead on commodity processors. This work introduces an interpretable and tamper-resilient hardware-assisted defense model, bridging local CPU execution with physical uncore traffic to provide robust protection against cache side channels.
