SHAKEing SLH-DSA with Non-profiled SCAs
Abstract
SLH-DSA is a hash-based digital signature algorithm, standardised by NIST as a post-quantum signature scheme. While prior work has analysed the vulnerability of its pseudorandom function (PRF) to differential side-channel analysis (SCA), no prior work has thoroughly examined this vulnerability under SHAKE as the PRF, nor recovered a full secret seed in practice. In this work, we address this gap by first analysing the differential SCA vulnerability of SLH-DSA-SHAKE, examining the inputs to the PRF and the possible selection functions for an attack. Then, based on this analysis, we propose a methodology to efficiently apply correlation power analysis (CPA) on every parameter set of SLH-DSA-SHAKE with three main steps: a strategy of averaging subtraces of the same signature to increase the signal-to-noise ratio; a partial-then-total CPA approach to reduce the complexity; and an efficient algorithm for the remaining exhaustive search to recover a full secret seed, which enables universal forgery. We then provide experimental results in simulation and on a 32-bit microcontroller. Our attack requires on average from $280$ to $559$ signatures, and in our experiments the exhaustive search completes within $45$ minutes on $72$ cores.
